Container Transport: Between Disruption and Innovation
In May 2025, the container transport sector is under pressure due to geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties, but at the same time shows signs of innovation and adaptation.
Trade conflicts, such as new U.S. import tariffs on Chinese goods, have led to a sharp drop in container traffic between China and the U.S. Ports such as Los Angeles and Seattle are reporting up to 35% less volume. Tensions in Africa, such as the drone attack on the container terminal in Port Sudan, are also causing logistical disruptions.
Yet the industry is not sitting still. In Australia, the world's largest all-electric freighter was launched - a major sign of progress toward zero-emission transport. At the same time, the market is struggling with overcapacity due to the influx of new megaships, putting pressure on freight rates, especially on the Asia-Europe route.
Thus, the industry moves between short-term problems and long-term solutions. Companies that invest in sustainable and efficient solutions now are laying the foundation for future-proof growth.
