Driving Bans in Europe
Regular driving bans 2023
Germany
HGVs heavier than 7.5 tonnes are banned from driving on the entire German road network between 00:00 and 22:00 on Sundays and public holidays. The driving ban also applies to vehicles travelling empty. Germany also has a summer driving ban on Saturdays in July and August.
France
In France, lorries over 7.5 tonnes are banned from Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00 and from the evening before a public holiday 22:00 to the public holiday itself 22:00. France also has a winter driving ban on all Saturdays in February and the first Saturday in March. In addition, there is a summer ban on Saturdays from 22 July to 26 August.
Greece
Vehicles over 1.5 tonnes payload are banned from driving on certain public holidays and days with heavy traffic to and from certain major cities. Consult the country information.
Hungary
For trucks heavier than 7.5 tonnes, the following applies:
1 July to 31 August: from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00 and from 22:00 the day before a public holiday to 22:00 the public holiday (when a public holiday precedes a Saturday or a Sunday, the driving ban remains applicable from the first day 08:00 to the last day 22:00 without interruption);
1 September to 30 June: from 22:00 the day before a Sunday or public holiday until 22:00 the Sunday or public holiday (where a public holiday precedes a Sunday, the driving ban remains applicable from the first day 08:00 to the last day 22:00 without interruption).
During the winter period from 4 November to 1 March, this driving ban does not apply to vehicles in international transport with at least a Euro III engine.
Italy
In Italy, there is a total driving ban for heavy goods vehicles over 7.5t on Sundays from 09:00 to 22:00. In June, July, August and September, this starts as early as 07:00.
Croatia
Vehicles with a MTM over 7.5t or longer than 14 m are prohibited from driving on the following roads: D 8, D 9, D 21 , D 23, D 39, D 66, D 200, D 300, Z 5002, on the
access road and in the area of the ro-ro port of Split and Zadar on: the day preceding a public holiday from 15:00 to 23:00, public holidays from 14:00 to 23:00.
If the public holiday or the last day of consecutive public holidays falls on a Friday or Saturday, the driving ban on Sunday applies from 12:00 to 23:00. If the public holiday falls on a Sunday or Monday, the driving ban on the Friday preceding the public holiday will apply from 15:00 to 23:00.
For freight vehicles with an MTM of more than 7.5 t, the driving ban on RN 2 between Varazdin and Dubrava Krizovljanska applies on Sunday from 06:00 to 22:00.
Luxembourg
HGVs heavier than 7.5t are banned in Luxembourg from driving towards France from Saturday or the day before a public holiday from 9.30pm until Sunday or the public holiday itself at
21.45 and towards Germany from Saturday or the day before a public holiday from 23.30 until Sunday or the public holiday itself at 21.45.
Austria
On public holidays, a driving ban is in force from 00:00 to 22:00. The driving ban applies to all lorry/trailer combinations at least one part of which has a ttg of more than 3.5t, as well as to lorries without trailers and tractor/semi-trailer combinations with a ttg of more than 7.5t.
On Saturdays from 7 Jan to 11 March between 07:00 – 15:00 on the A12 Inntal and A13 Brenner motorways

In addition, Austria has a weekend driving ban from Saturday afternoon 15:00 until Sunday evening 22:00 (see also night driving ban country information). There are also holiday driving bans, night driving bans, bans on the Inntalautobahn A12, specific local driving bans and a sectoral driving ban.
Poland
In Poland, there is a driving ban for trucks heavier than 12 tonnes on the day preceding a
holiday between 18.00 and 22.00 and on the holiday itself between 8.00 and 22.00.
The country also has driving bans on the last Friday in June until the Sunday before the start of the school year:
on Friday from 00 to 22.00
on Saturday from 00 to 14.00
on Sunday from 00 to 22.00.
Portugal
Driving bans apply to the transport of dangerous goods with vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes:
on Friday, Sunday and public holidays and the day before from 18:00 to 21: 00 on roads EN 6 between Lisboa and Cascais, EN 10 between Infantado and Vila Franca de Xira, EN 14 between Maia and Braga, IC 1 between Coimbrões and Miramar, EN 209 between Porto and Gondomar, EN 1 between Carvalhos and Vila Nova de Gaia (Santo Ovídio), EN 101 between Braga and Vila Verde, IC 4 (EN 125) between São João da Venda and Faro, EN 125 between Faro and Olhão
on Mondays from 07:00 to 10:00, except in the months of July and August, on Lisbon and Oporto access roads (in the direction of the city) : A1 , A2, A5, A8, IC19, EN6, EN10, A3, A4, EN13, EN105, IC1 , EN209, EN222 (ER).
throughout the year in various tunnels on the A 23
daily from 05:00 to 02:00 the next day on the bridge of 25 April (Lisbon)
Romania
Vehicles with a MTM over 7.5t are banned from driving on national roads:
DN1, km 17+900 (Otopeni border ) – Ploeisti (intersection DN1 -DN1 A) : all year round Monday to Thursday from 06:00 to 22:00, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 0:00 to 24:00
DN1, km 67+400 Ploiesti (intersection DN1 – DJ1236) – Brasov (intersection DN1 -DN1A) all year round Monday to Thursday from 06:00 to 22:00, Fridays and Saturdays from 0:00 to 01:00 and from 05:00 to 24:00
DN7 Pitesti (intersection DN7 with DN7C) – Ramnicu Valcea – Vestem (intersection DN7-DN1 ) the day before a public holiday from 16:00 to 22:00 and the public holiday from 06:00 to 22:00.
If a day, which is not a public holiday, falls between a public holiday and a Saturday or Sunday, and if that day is declared a public holiday by government decree, driving is prohibited on certain national roads for vehicles with an MMA exceeding 7.5t between 06:00 and 22:00.
Vehicles with an MTM va over 7.5t are banned from driving on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 Jul i to 31 August during the hours listed below:
A2 Bucharest (junction A2 – Bucharest ring road) – Fundulea – Lehliu – Fetesti – Cernavoda – Constanta (junction A2 with A4)
Bucharest – Constanta: Friday and Saturday from 00:00 to 22:00
Constanta – Bucharest: Sunday from 00:00 to 22:00
DN39 Agigea – (intersection DN39 – DN 39A) – Mangalia ( entrance) , in both directions: Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 00h00 to 22h00
DN22C Murfatlar (intersection DN22C – DN3) – Cernavoda (intersection DN22C – A2) ,Murfatlar – Cernavoda, Sunday from 00:00 to 22:00
Bucharest:
There is a driving ban all days between 1 July and 31 August from 07:00 to 20:00 in the centre of Bucharest. Outside these hours, access to the centre is possible only with a special permit. These driving bans are signposted.
Slovenia
Trucks heavier than 7.5 tonnes are banned from driving on Sundays, national holidays and non-working days on certain roads between 8:00 and 21:00. From the last weekend in June to the first weekend in September, there is also a driving ban on Saturdays between 8:00 and 13:00.
There is an additional summer driving ban on the same roads on which the general driving ban applies. On Saturdays from 08:00 to 13:00 and on Sundays, public holidays and holidays from 08:00 to 21:00.
On the road sections listed below, and this in both directions, the summer driving ban applies on Saturdays from 06:00 to 16:00 and on Sundays, public holidays and holidays from 08:00 to 22:00.
Road sections affected: A1-E61 /70 Ljubl jana – Koper , A3-E70 Divaca (Gabrk) – Fernetici (Fernetti )
, H5-E751 Skof i je – Koper , G1 – 11 Koper – Dragonja, G1 -6 Postojna – Jelsane.
Slovakia
There is a driving ban for trucks heavier than 7.5 tonnes on Sundays and public holidays on the main road network from 00.00 to 22.00. Trucks heavier than 12 tonnes are also banned from driving on all Class III streets. The same vehicles and roads are banned from driving from 07:00 to 19:00 every Saturday from 1 July to 31 August.
Spain
Spain has a very detailed and complex system of driving bans that is NOT included in the overview below. There is a national driving ban on Sundays and public holidays from 08:00 to 24:00 only for the transport of dangerous goods. The day before a holiday (not Saturday), the driving ban is from 13:00 to 24:00.ADR vehicles must drive on motorways and trunk roads (RIMP route/map). Drivers must take the nearest exit/ramp at the loading or unloading site.
For trucks heavier than 7.5 tonnes, the Basque Country and Catalonia have driving bans on parts of the A-8, A-15, AP-8, GI-11, GI-20, GI-636, N-1, N-121A, N-240, N-622 and N-634 on certain days of the

Czech Republic
Lorries and combinations heavier than 7.5 tonnes are not allowed to drive on motorways, international thoroughfares and Level I national roads between 1pm and 10pm on Sundays and public holidays.
The same vehicles are banned from driving on the same roads from 1 July to 31 August: on Fridays from 17:00 to 21:00 , Saturdays from 07:00 to 11:00 and Sundays and public holidays from 13:00 to 22:00.
Switzerland
Driving bans on Sundays and public holidays between 00:00 and 24:00, night driving bans all year round every day between 22:00 and 05:00.
Cantonal driving bans do not apply to transit traffic.
