When planning road transport in Belgium, knowledge of applicable driving bans for exceptional transport is crucial.
Driving bans on holidays and special circumstances
For the transportation of goods exceeding the maximum permitted dimensions and weights (width 2.55 m, length 18.75/16.50 m, weight 44 tons for vehicle combinations with 5 or more axles), driving bans are in effect on the following holidays and in special circumstances:
- January 1
- Easter Monday
- May 1
- Ascension Day
- 2nd Pentecost
- July 21 (national holiday)
- Aug. 15 (Assumption of Mary)
- Nov. 1 (All Saints Day)
- Nov. 11 (Armistice Day 1918)
- December 25
Road restrictions:
When transporting goods with a width of more than 4 m or a length of more than 30 m, there is a daily driving ban on all roads from 06:00 to 21:00.
On highways with less than 3 lanes in the same direction, a driving ban applies from 06:00 to 21:00 for goods with a width of more than 3.5 m.
Weekend restrictions:
The transport of goods exceeding the maximum permitted dimensions and weights is prohibited from Saturday 12:00 a.m. to Sunday 24:00 p.m., except for moving cranes that do not exceed the maximum total weight of 96 tons or have a width of up to 3.0 m.
General limitations:
Goods weighing 60 tons and more, wider than 3.5 m and longer than 27 m are banned from driving daily from 07:00 to 09:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00.
Weather-related limitations:
The transportation of exceptional cargo is prohibited during snow and icy road conditions, as well as during fog, snowfall or rain where visibility is less than 200 m.
