When planning road transport in the Czech Republic, knowledge of the applicable driving restrictions for exceptional transport is crucial. Here is a brief overview of these driving restrictions.
Driving bans on Holidays and Special Circumstances
Additional driving ban for vehicles
A driving ban is in effect in the Czech Republic for trucks with a maximum Permitted Mass (MTM) of more than 7.5 tons and for vehicle combinations where the towing unit has a MTM of more than 3.5 tons. This driving ban applies on Sundays and holidays from 1 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Vacation ban
In addition to the general driving ban, there is a vacation ban from July 1 to August 31 for vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 7.5 tons:
- on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- on Saturdays and general holidays from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Exceptions
A permanent waiver applies to:
- combined transport rail/road or barge/road over the shortest route between shipper or consignee and the closest loading or unloading terminal
- transportation of agricultural products in harvest time
- transportation of perishable goods according to the ATP, provided that more than half of the cargo space is occupied
- transport of live animals
- transportation for the purpose of road construction and maintenance
- transportation of goods to or from ships, trains or aircraft, within a radius of 100 km
- postal
- unladen vehicles in relation to the above transports
- transportation of chemicals sensitive to temperature changes
Waiver
Exemptions may be granted in urgent cases, such as transport for trade fairs, exhibitions and markets and transport of race horses and cattle for slaughter. Exemptions must be submitted to the Ministry of Transport at least four weeks prior to the transport: Ministerstvo dopravy CR, Nábrezi Ludvika Svobody 12, CZ 11015 Praha 1, T: 00 420 (0)2-51411111.
