Driving bans on Holidays and Special Circumstances

Driving bans

There is a driving ban on all Sundays and holidays for transit to Germany and France with vehicles with an authorized total weight over 7.5 tons.

  • from Belgium or Germany towards France: from Saturday or the day before a public holiday 9:30 p.m. to Sunday or the public holiday 9:45 p.m. (this also applies to French public holidays: Liberation Day, National Holiday and Armistice Day.
  • from Belgium or France towards Germany: from Saturday or the day before a public holiday from 11:30 p.m. until Sunday or the public holiday 9:45 p.m. (this also applies to German public holidays: Good Friday, Corpus Christi and National Holiday)

Exceptions

  • transportation of live animals, cut flowers or perishable foods under the ATP, provided the goods constitute at least half of the payload or half of the load area of the vehicle or combination
  • vehicles traveling empty to Germany in relation to the transport referred to above
  • vehicles used in the harvest period to transport agricultural products from the place of harvest to the place of storage or handling of these products
  • loaded vehicles for the purpose of official economic, sporting, cultural, educational or political events
  • vehicles transporting goods for the benefit of the press
  • business relocations
  • vehicles of traders used for selling products at (annual) markets or fairs
  • vehicles with destination Germany used for combined rail/road transport between the place of loading or unloading and the rail terminal provided the distance to be covered does not exceed 200 km
  • vehicles intended for the transportation of damaged vehicles

All transit vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 tons must use the highways. These routes are indicated by road signs.

Waiver
