The Port of Rotterdam experienced a slight decline in throughput in 2024, but continues to invest in the future. Despite geopolitical tensions and economic challenges, the port is showing resilience and making strides in digitalization and sustainability.
Decline in throughput, growth in containers
Total throughput at the Port of Rotterdam declined 0.7% to 435.8 million tons, mainly due to lower coal and crude oil throughput. By contrast, container transhipment grew 2.8% to 13.8 million TEUs, driven by increased consumer spending. Iron ore and scrap (+5.7%) and mineral oil products also showed increases.
Sustainable investments
There is a strong commitment to sustainability with projects such as CO₂ storage (Porthos) and hydrogen infrastructure. New shore power agreements were also concluded and the shore power installation for Cruise Terminal Rotterdam is nearing completion.
Cybersecurity and security
Digitization is playing an increasing role in the port. Establishing a national cybersecurity platform strengthens resilience against cyber threats. In addition, the Chain of Trust prevents misuse of logistics chains by criminals. Since its implementation, 630,000 containers have already been processed securely.
Outlook
Despite challenges, the Port of Rotterdam continues to invest in a sustainable and digital future. The port remains a crucial pivot in European and global logistics.
