How do we calculate our freight rate?

Weight

For a groupage container, we consolidate multiple groupage shipments from different owners into one container. In this case, you pay for the space utilized in the container. We calculate the rates using the Measurement/Weight (M/W) method: per cubic meter (‘measurement’) or per ton (‘weight’). It’s the same as the chargeable weight, but with a different name. For instance, 1 cbm of lead will weigh more than 1 cbm of feathers, and conversely, 1,000 kgs of feathers will take up more space than 1,000 kgs of lead.

Freight insurance

Ensure that freight insurance is included as a separate line item. Typically, if freight insurance is not included in a transport proposal, it’s not included in the quote. When reviewing international freight shipping proposals, also check if the insurance covers door-to-door destination cargo. Often, the forwarder only covers goods from port to port, excluding all claims for transportation (freight carriage). Damage and theft often occur between the origin door and the origin or destination port and the destination. In our opinion, this is when the cargo is most vulnerable to claims. Learn more about freight insurance: are your goods truly covered?

Possible customs inspection

Customs usually conducts inspections aimed at specific issues or certain types of shipments. However, even if you are doing nothing wrong or if your goods are not subject to such inspections, you can still be affected by random inspections.

What we do

LCL rates

For handling LCL shipments in Rotterdam, we will charge for the unloading of containers, customs formalities, and any transport to the final destination.

Wharfage

Wharfage is a fee for cargo that remains too long in our warehouse. Generally, you don’t need to worry about wharfage. However, if a situation arises where you can’t take away your goods within the stipulated time, please contact us.

Pallet exchange

We unload using standard euro pallets and seal them. You can exchange these pallets on delivery. If this is not possible, we will have to charge for them.

 FCL

For FCL we will charge the THC as well as the ISPS and the loading guidance. Once these costs have been paid to the shipping line, we will handle customs formalities and take out the container. We will then charge for transport to the final destination.

How do we calculate our freight rate?

Demurrage

Demurrage is a fee for cargo that remains too long in a destination port. Generally, you don’t need to worry about demurrage if you know how much time you have to keep your cargo in the port, both in import and export situations. However, a problem arises when you don’t inquire about your free time in the port, or assume that the time in all ports where your cargo arrives is equal.

For example, if the country to which you are transporting your goods has longer waiting times in the port than in another country, you will incur detention and demurrage charges that you could have avoided if you had done more research. Unfortunately, demurrage can be a costly mistake, costing hundreds of dollars for each day that your goods are in the port.

General Rate Increase (GRI)

A General Rate Increase is a surcharge that carriers add to their regular base rates. A GRI can occur on all or only a few trade routes for a certain period. Typically, carriers announce updated charges at the beginning of the month and adjust rates based on the current volume situation. A GRI is always announced.

Overweight container rates

When shipping a full container load (FCL), you will incur additional charges for overweight containers.

What customs formalities and documentation are involved in ocean freight?

Documentation

You can rely on us for a range of customs formalities related to export, import, storage, and transit shipments. We also gladly assist you with veterinary inspections or advise you on specific customs or tax issues. Our goal is to provide you with peace of mind. Below is some more information about the various invoices:

Commercial Invoice

A complete and accurate commercial invoice is the key to a smooth customs clearance process. Customs authorities need this information to determine possible taxes and import duties. By correctly completing the commercial invoice, you can help prevent delays.

Certificate of origin

The Certificate of Origin (CvO, Certificate of Origin) is a document that indicates the origin of the goods you supplied. The CvO has a fixed layout and can only be printed by authorized printers. In the Netherlands, for example, this is Beurtvaartadres. A Certificate of Origin is characterized by a unique number issued by the printer, and each blank form is therefore unique. The CvO is reviewed, approved, and stamped by the Chamber of Commerce (KvK).

EUR.1 Certificate and Invoice Declaration

The EUR.1 certificate is a preferential trade document that can result in a reduction or waiver of customs duties. The amount of customs duty (import duty) can vary for each country and each product. The EU has concluded preferential trade agreements with some countries or groups of countries. However, you must meet the requirements set out in the customs legislation or separately concluded protocols.

Pro-forma invoice

Proforma literally means “for the sake of form.” A pro-forma invoice is not an official invoice but a preliminary invoice. A pro-forma invoice is the type of invoice most commonly used in international trade to enable a buyer to prepare certain customs formalities, such as clearance documents.
