How are ocean freight rates constructed?
Demurrage.
Demurrage is a charge for goods that stay too long at a destination port. Generally, you do not have to worry about this if you are aware of the permitted length of stay at the port, both for imports and exports. Problems can arise, however, if you are not aware of the permitted length of stay, or if you assume it is the same at all ports. For example, if the country to which you are transporting goods has longer dwell times at the port than another country, costs may arise that could have been avoided with a little more research. Unfortunately, these costs can be high, amounting to hundreds of dollars per day that your goods remain in port.
General Rate Increase (GRI).
A General Rate Increase is a surcharge that shipping companies add to their regular base rate. It may apply to all or only some trade lanes during a certain period of time. Usually, carriers announce updated charges at the beginning of the month and adjust rates based on the current volume situation. A General Rate Increase is always announced.
What do we base our rates on?
In setting our fees, we strive for transparency and fairness. Several factors play a role in determining the cost of our services.
Here are some important considerations:
Dimension / Weight (A/G)
With groupage containers, several shipments from different owners are loaded into one container. Here you pay for the space used in the container. We use the Dimension/Geight (A/G) method here: per cubic meter ("dimension") or per ton ("weight"). This is basically the same as loadable weight, but with a different nomenclature. For example, a cubic meter of lead weighs more than a cubic meter of feathers. Conversely, 1,000 kg of springs takes up more space than 1,000 kg of lead.
Cargo Insurance
Make sure freight insurance is listed separately. If not included in the proposal, it is usually not included. Check that the insurance provides door-to-door coverage. Freight forwarders often only cover from port to port, so claims during road transport are not covered. Damage and theft are common between door of origin and port. This is the riskiest time for claims.
Rates LCL
For handling LCL shipments in Rotterdam, we charge a fee for unloading the containers. Customs formalities and possibly transport to the final destination are also included.
Pilot fees
Lead charges are charges for goods that stay in our storage facility too long. Generally, you do not have to worry about this. However, in the event that you are unable to pick up your goods within the allotted time, please contact us.
FCL (Full Container Load)
For FCL, we charge Terminal Handling Charges (THC), as well as ISPS and Load Monitoring. Once these charges are paid to the shipping company, we will arrange customs formalities and remove the container. Thereafter, we charge fees for transportation to the final destination.
Rates for overweight containers
When shipping a full container load (FCL) with a heavy commodity, it is essential to verify the maximum load capacity with us. Overweight containers are subject to additional charges."
Pallet Exchange
We unload on euro pallets and seal them as standard. Upon delivery, you can exchange these pallets. If this fails, we will have to charge for this.
