The global shipping sector, responsible for more than 80 percent of global goods transport, is once again facing a rise in carbon emissions. A recent study shows that emissions from the shipping sector will have returned to 2008 levels by 2023, despite efforts to make the sector more sustainable.

The study shows that CO₂ emissions from shipping have risen again in recent years, mainly due to an increase in transport volumes and the limited adoption of cleaner technologies. Although strides have been made, such as the use of LNG and energy-efficient innovations, the sector remains largely dependent on heavy fuel oil, one of the most polluting fuels.
