New sea lock in Terneuzen opened

An important milestone in European logistics infrastructure took place on Oct. 11, 2024. King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and King Philip of Belgium officially opened the Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen. This ultramodern sea lock, located in North Sea Port, represents a major improvement for the shipping route between the North Sea and the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. For Neele-Vat, this represents an important step in optimizing their maritime transport services.

Expansion of logistics capabilities with the new lock

The New Terneuzen Lock is one of the largest in the world and has impressive dimensions of 427 meters long, 55 meters wide and 16.44 meters deep. This allows larger ships to pass through, up to 366 meters long and 49 meters wide. This development improves the flow of goods between Belgium and the Netherlands by reducing waiting times and increasing the overall capacity for both sea and inland vessels.

Economic benefits and cross-border cooperation

This monumental project is expected to stimulate economic growth in the border region. With improved access between the North Sea and inland destinations, the lock will attract new shipping, boosting trade and creating jobs in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal Zone. As a logistics service provider committed to providing pragmatic solutions across Europe, Neele-Vat will be well positioned to support this growing economic activity.

The project was led by the Flemish-Dutch Scheldt Commission, highlighting the strong cooperation between the Netherlands and Flanders. With the ability to accommodate larger ships and reduce transit times, the new lock is in line with Neele-Vat 's goal of providing efficient, hassle-free border logistics. In addition, this infrastructure upgrade plays a crucial role in improving barge connections along the Seine-Scheldt corridor, a key route for Neele-Vat 's operations in the region.

Future growth in maritime logistics

North Sea Port's capacity is expected to increase significantly as more ships begin to use the new lock. By 2040, the number of ships passing through the Terneuzen lock complex is expected to increase to 96,000 per year, compared to 56,000 in 2023.
