Sustainable milestone in coastal shipping: World's largest electric container ship in service While the maritime sector is under pressure worldwide to reduce its carbon footprint, China has taken a significant step in fleet electrification. The "Ning Yuan Dian Kun," the world's largest electric container ship, completed its first commercial sailing on Wednesday. For the logistics directors of the future, this marks a crucial tipping point in making regional supply chains more sustainable.

Record-breaking battery capacity

The new vessel from Ningbo Ocean Shipping (Nbosco) has a capacity of 742 TEU, dethroning the “Greenwater 01” (700 TEU). Although its size stands in stark contrast to the 24,000-TEU ocean giants, the technological performance behind the scenes is impressive:

- Container batteries: The ship is powered by ten mega-batteries physically shaped like standard shipping containers.
- Energy storage: With a combined capacity of nearly 20,000 kWh, the power is comparable to that of over 350 Tesla's or 25 electric trucks.
- Operational peace: In addition to the reduction in emissions, the crew reports a huge improvement in working conditions. The engine rooms, normally a source of noise and vibration, are virtually silent on this ship.

Focus on 'Short Sea' and Coastal Shipping

The "Ning Yuan Dian Kun" is specifically designed for short sea routes, in this case between the port cities of Ningbo and Jiaxing. This type of short sea shipping lends itself ideally to electric propulsion because of its fixed rotations and the ability to change or recharge batteries during loading and unloading.

Pressure is also building in Europe. Norway is currently working on plans for 850 TEU electric ships for routes between Scandinavia and Germany. The trend is clear: where deep sea routes are still waiting for alternative fuels such as hydrogen or ammonia, electricity is becoming the standard for regional connections.

Strategic value for the green supply chain

For shippers seeking to reduce their “Scope 3” emissions, the rise of electric coastal shipping offers new opportunities. The use of zero-emission vessels in the pre- and post-transport legs can significantly reduce the total CO2 impact of a shipment without compromising efficiency in major logistics hubs.
