What is the difference between import duties and excise taxes?

14-10-2025

When importing goods into the EU, businesses face various taxes and duties. Two commonly used terms are import duties and excise taxes. Although both are costs in international trade, they differ substantially in application and purpose.

- Import duties are taxes paid when bringing in goods from countries outside the EU.
- Excise duties are consumption taxes that apply to specific products such as alcohol, tobacco and mineral oils, regardless of whether they were produced inside or outside the EU.

For logistics managers and buyers worldwide, this distinction is important because it directly affects cost price and compliance within the supply chain.
