European Parliament opens door for 17-year-old drivers
14-10-2024
In October 2024, the European Parliament approved a landmark law that will allow 17-year-olds to drive heavy vehicles (HGVs) under supervision. The rule, part of a broader reform of EU driver licensing rules, aims to address the growing driver shortage in the logistics sector. Young drivers will be allowed to drive trucks under the supervision of an experienced driver aged 24 or older, and from the age of 18 they will be allowed to drive independently.
The European transport and logistics sector is facing a severe shortage of qualified drivers, which has put pressure on supply chains across Europe. For logistics companies, this change in the law offers new opportunities to attract young talent. By bringing young people into the profession earlier, logistics providers can address capacity shortages more effectively and provide faster, more reliable transportation services to their customers.
Despite the potential benefits, the decision has also drawn criticism, especially from road safety experts. Critics, such as the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), warn that younger drivers may lack the experience and maturity to drive large vehicles safely, which could increase the risk of accidents. Research shows that younger drivers are at higher accident risk, a major concern raised by safety experts in response to this reform.
For Neele-Vat, safety remains a top priority. As a logistics company committed to trouble-free and safe transportation, we will closely monitor how these new regulations are implemented and ensure that any new drivers hired are adequately trained and prepared to meet the company's high safety standards.
Neele-Vat recognizes that changing regulations require flexibility and adaptation. In addition to expanding recruitment opportunities with younger drivers, Neele-Vat will leverage its expertise in training and development to ensure that all drivers meet the highest standards of professionalism and safety, in line with its long-standing commitment to quality service.
