First exemptions for zero-emission zones successfully applied for

From January 1, 2025, zero-emission zones will come into effect in several Dutch cities, designed to make urban logistics more sustainable and improve air quality. Entrepreneurs can apply for exemptions under certain conditions to maintain access to these zones, an opportunity we are strategically exploiting to further strengthen our sustainable logistics services.

Successful applications through central counter

Since the opening of the Central Counter on July 1, 2024, entrepreneurs have successfully applied for the first exemptions. This counter facilitates the application process for both national and municipal waivers. A total of nine different waivers are available: six national and three municipal. It is important to note that municipal exemptions can only be applied for after the relevant municipality has made the necessary decisions and signed documents. Entrepreneurs are advised to check in a timely manner that their municipality has completed these steps.

Transitional arrangements and support

In order to support entrepreneurs in the transition to zero-emission transport, various transition schemes and subsidies are available. For example, entrepreneurs can use the AanZET subsidy for the purchase of zero-emission trucks. In the extra round of this subsidy scheme on October 1, 2024, almost the entire budget of €22.2 million was applied for within one day, underlining the high demand for zero-emission vehicles in the transport sector. Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) has stressed that a consistent approach to zero-emission zones is essential for fair competition and a smooth transition. This means not only applying for exemptions where necessary, but also advising clients on the most efficient and environmentally friendly logistics strategies.

Entrepreneurs who have not yet applied for an exemption are encouraged to do so as soon as possible through the Central Counter. It is also advisable to closely monitor developments around zero-emission zones and the availability of subsidies so that they can anticipate changes in time and adapt their logistics processes to the new environmental regulations.
