Global logistics is placing ever-higher demands on security and efficiency. The Port of Rotterdam, one of the most important hubs for international trade, is taking the lead in this effort. With the introduction of the Secure Chain system, vulnerabilities are minimized and security improvements are implemented.

Transition from traditional PINs to combat fraud

Previously, the release of import containers was managed using PIN codes. Although these codes granted authorized parties access to shipments, their limitations—particularly their susceptibility to fraud—made the system vulnerable. For this reason, the transition to the Secure Chain is necessary. This new system eliminates the risks associated with physical PIN codes and introduces a secure, digital environment that manages access to container data. For companies like ours, this change offers improved reliability and transparency in logistics operations.

How the Secure Chain benefits

Starting October 1, 2024, the Secure Chain system will be implemented for import containers from Africa, the Middle East, India, and Pakistan. This expansion builds on previous successful implementations for Latin America and North America. By using the Portbase platform, Neele-Vat, along with other stakeholders, benefits from a digitized and secure process. As a result, only trusted parties are involved in the container handling chain. Furthermore, proper authorizations from the shipping line to the terminal ensure that vulnerabilities that could enable fraud are eliminated.

Collaboration for increased security

The Secure Chain initiative stems from close collaboration between logistics companies, port authorities, Dutch Customs, and law enforcement agencies. In addition, key representatives from the business community and local government also play a role, underscoring the shared vision of enhanced security and smooth trade flows. Given Rotterdam’s reputation as a crucial logistics hub, Secure Chain has the potential to set a precedent for other ports worldwide. This will lead to a more uniform approach to global logistics security.
