The Suez Canal, one of the world's most important maritime hubs, will gradually recover by 2025 from the sharp decline in shipping traffic caused by geopolitical tensions and security incidents in the Middle East. Osama Rabie, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), expects ship passage to gradually normalize this year.
In recent months, Suez Canal revenues suffered a severe blow, with a drop of as much as 60%, meaning billions in losses for Egypt. This was largely due to Houthi rebels' attacks on ships in the Red Sea, forcing many shipping companies to divert to alternative routes, such as the longer shipping route via the Cape of Good Hope.
The situation in the Middle East remains a determining factor for the maritime sector. Houthi rebels recently indicated that they will no longer attack Western ships, thanks to the truce between Israel and Hamas. This could speed up the restoration of shipping through the Suez Canal, according to Rabie.
Yet for now, major shipping companies, including Maersk, continue to insist on diversion routes through southern Africa. Currently, an average of only 32 ships per day pass through the canal, a drastic drop from the 75 ships per day before the Gaza war. Supertankers in particular still barely use the waterway, adding to Egypt's financial losses.
The Suez Canal disruptions have had a major impact on global trade. Higher fuel costs, longer transit times and rising transportation rates have put pressure on supply chains, forcing many companies to revise their logistics strategies.
The expected recovery of shipping traffic in 2025 will bring shorter transit times and possibly lower transportation costs, provided the situation in the region remains stable.
