Schiphol fare hikes lead to criticism
10-12-2024
The air cargo industry has strongly criticized Amsterdam Schiphol Airport's announced rate increases. Starting in 2025, the airport plans to increase rates by as much as 37% over a three-year period. This decision has raised concerns from airlines, industry associations and logistics companies that depend on Schiphol for its air cargo operations.
The planned adjustments include a 41% rate increase in 2025, followed by an additional 5% increase in 2026, then a 7.5% reduction in 2027. Schiphol says these measures are necessary due to high inflation and rising interest rates in recent years. The proceeds will be used to finance a €6 billion investment plan focused on improvements in infrastructure, service quality and environmental sustainability.
The fare structure imposes higher costs on older, noisier aircraft, particularly for night flights. While this fits within Schiphol's goal of reducing noise pollution, it causes major challenges for cargo carriers, which often rely on older models such as the Boeing 747-400F.
Air Cargo Netherlands (ACN) has spoken out against the increases, stressing that Schiphol offers cargo carriers few alternatives. The organization points out that many airlines are already working to modernize their fleets, but global disruptions in supply chains are slowing these efforts.
Neele-Vat shares these concerns and stresses that the sudden rate increases could disrupt the seamless air cargo services it offers worldwide. We are committed to hassle-free logistics, we recognize the importance of sustainability initiatives, but believe that a gradual implementation of the increases would better reflect the transition to quieter and more efficient aircraft.
Schiphol defends the new fees on the grounds that they are necessary to fund improvements in airport operations and noise abatement. The airport believes the fee structure will encourage airlines to operate quieter aircraft, benefiting surrounding communities.
As a family-owned company, we are committed to providing efficient and reliable air cargo solutions. We continue to adapt to industry changes and advocate fair practices that support both operational excellence and sustainability.
