Stricter rules for Chinese e-commerce and impact on air cargo industry
17-01-2025
The recent tightening of customs regulations and increased import duties in both the United States and Europe are causing major changes within the logistics industry. This affects not only Chinese e-commerce companies, but also us, Neele-Vat. We need to adapt to the new reality.
Due to tighter regulations, Chinese e-commerce companies are increasingly choosing ocean freight as their transportation method. While air freight has traditionally been preferred because of speed, ocean freight offers a cheaper alternative that is less sensitive to tighter customs regulations. This shift has implications for air cargo carriers.
In the first half of 2024, the volume of Chinese e-commerce shipments in global air freight grew 22%, amounting to 2.8 million tons. Europe saw a 21% growth, accounting for an additional volume of 146,000 tons. This resulted in a load factor of 87% for cargo flights from the Far East to the U.S. and 86% to Europe. Despite this growth, the future of air cargo is under pressure due to new regulations.
For us, this means continuing to optimize air cargo solutions, while at the same time responding to the increasing demand for ocean freight solutions.
German authorities have called for tighter controls on Chinese e-commerce imports and a review of the 150-euro value limit above which import duties apply. These measures should address unfair competition but pose a challenge to logistics companies.
