When planning road transport in Austria, knowledge of the applicable driving restrictions for exceptional transport is crucial. Here is a brief overview of these driving restrictions.
Driving bans on Holidays and Special Circumstances
General weekend driving ban
There is a driving ban from Saturday 3 p.m. to Sunday 10 p.m. and on public holidays from 0 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the entire road network:
- trucks and tractor-trailer combinations with a tmm of more than 7.5 tons
- trucks with trailers where the truck or trailer has a tmm of more than 3.5 tons
This driving ban does not apply to:
- transportation of slightly perishable food (with a maximum shelf life of 1 week from the date of transport)
- empty vehicles on an outward or the return journey in relation to the transportation of perishable goods (to be demonstrated through the cargo documents)
- tractors without trailers
- transport of livestock for slaughter
- transport of milk
- Before and after combined transport within 65 km from the following stations: Brennersee, Enns Hafen, Graz-Ostbahnhof, Graz Süd CCT, Salzburg-Hauptbahnhof, Wels-Verschiebebahnhof, Villach-Fürnitz, Wien-Südbahnhof, Wien-Nordwestbahnhof and Wörgl
Please note that the transportation of fresh flowers and plants is not covered by these exceptions.
General night driving ban
Trucks with a ttg of more 7.5 tons are banned from driving on the entire road network between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. This driving ban does not apply to:
Low-noise vehicles (Lärm-arm): trucks that produce no more noise than:
- 78 dBA at motor power up to 150 kW
- 80 dBA at motor power greater than 150 kW
Trucks that meet these requirements must have a round green sticker or sign on the front with the white letter 'L' . They must also have a valid and original L statement from the manufacturer in the vehicle.
Combined rail/road transport with a CIM/UIRR document showing that the container or swap body is or has been transported by rail. This includes the routes to and from:
- Südbahnhof Vienna
- Ostbahnhof Graz
- Bahnhof Villach-Fürnitz
- Verschiebebahnhof Wesl
- Bahnhof Brennersee
- Haubtbahnhof Salzburg
Night driving ban on A12 (Inntal-Autobahn)
On the A12 (Inntal-Autobahn) between Kufstein/Langkampfen (km 6.350) and Zirl (km 90.0), there is a nighttime ban in both directions for trucks and truck combinations with an allowable total weight of more than 7.5 tons:
- From May 1 to October 31: on weekdays between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- From November 1 to April 30: on weekdays between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
- On Sundays and holidays: between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
This driving ban does not apply to, among others:
- transporting perishable goods with a maximum shelf life of several days (at least 51% of the cargo)
- the transportation of periodicals
- transportation of goods for urgent medical care
- the transportation of live animals
- transportation by trucks with EURO-6. This must be provable with a certified document issued by the dealer showing the emission values.
- additionally by January 1, 2021, for the EURO VI category, the loading or unloading destination must be located in the "Core Zone" or the expanded Core Zone:
- Core zone:
- district of Imst, Innsbruck (municipality), Innsbruck city, Kufstein and Schwaz
- Expanded zone:
- - Austria: district of Kitzbühel, Landeck, Lienz, Reutte and Zell am See
- - Germany: district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Miesbach, Rosenheim (incl. town) and Traunstein
- -Italy: the municipalities of Eisacktal and Pustertal Valley
- Also only for the section of the A12 Inntal Autobahn between Ampass (KM 72.00) and Zirl (KM 90.00) in a southerly direction, e.g. for transport on the A12/A13 from Voralberg to Italy
- Fully electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles
Permanent Euro-norm driving ban A12 (Inntal-Autobahn)
The A12 (Inntal-Autobahn) between Kufstein/Langkampfen (km 6.350) and Zirl (km 90.0) is also subject to a permanent driving ban for environmentally damaging vehicles. This ban applies 24 hours a day in both directions throughout the year.
Permanent driving ban for trucks and tractor-trailer combinations with a MTM exceeding 7.5 tons and truck/trailer combinations where the sum of both MTMs exceeds 7.5 tons. This driving ban applies to vehicles with:
- Present: Euro 0, 1, 2 and 3
- As of October 31, 2019 Euro 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 (allowed with EURO-5 and 6 vehicles)
- From Jan. 1, 2021 Euro 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (allowed with EURO-6 vehicles)

The 2023 summer driving ban (new dates for 2024 will be available in May)
A12/A13 Inntal/Brenner Destination Italy: driving ban on all Saturdays from July 1, 2023 to August 26, 2023 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for transit Austria with destination Italy or a destination reached via Italy. This driving ban applies to all vehicles and vehicle combination over 7.5ton MTM Following this is the regular weekend driving ban.
A12/A13 Inntal/Brenner Destination Germany: driving ban on all Saturdays from July 1, 2023 to August 26, 2023 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for transit Austria with destination Germany or a destination reached via Germany. This driving ban applies to all vehicles and vehicle combinations over 7.5ton MTM
Following this is the regular weekend driving ban.
This driving ban does not apply to:
- transport of livestock for slaughter
- transportation of slightly perishable food products
- carriage of periodicals
- medical supplies
- transportation for the purpose of road or rail construction
- beverage supply to gas stations, restaurants, tourist areas
- towing services
- Auxiliary
- transport for the purpose of road and rail construction
- combined rail-road transport from the loading address to the closest suitable station, or from the closest station to the unloading address (you provide a CIM/UIRR waybill required)
- empty trips to, among other places, the driver's residence, the company's business address or a truck parking lot
- Other vacation bans
In addition, vehicles and vehicle combinations over 7.5ton MTM will be banned from driving in both directions on all Saturdays from July 1, 2023 to August 26, 2023 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on:
- Loferer Straße B178 from Lofer to Wörgl
- Ennstal Straße B320 from road mileage 4,500
- Seefelder Straße B177 throughout the area
- Fernpassstraße B179 from Nassereith to Biberwier
- Achensee Straße B181 throughout the area
The above vehicles are also banned from driving on all Saturdays from July 1, 2023 to August 26, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the eastern A4 freeway from the Schwechat interchange to the Nickelsdorf state border in both directions, except for destination and source traffic to and from the districts of Neusiedl am See, Eisenstadt, Eisenstadt-Umgebung, Rust, Mattersburg, Bruck an der Leitha, Gänserndorf and Korneuburg

- Vehicles with special bodywork (with a bodywork value of more than €100,000): For example, silo and tank vehicles, concrete mixers, exhibition vehicles.
Driving ban Carinthia
On the A11, Karawanken Autobahn (between km 15,400 to km 21,250), a driving ban is in effect from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. on all Saturdays from June 28 through Sept. 13 for vehicles with a maximum permissible total weight of more than 7.5 tons.
